Answer to Question 1

(1) It is a carryover from patriarchal and patrilineal customs in which, upon marriage, the wife became the legal property of her husband. (2) Last names clarify paternity. (3) It demonstrates that women have found a husband to avoid the stigma associated with being unmarried.
