- Perceptual Accuracy: Being able to deliver messages so they are received in the manner we intend is another critical skill.
- Predictive Accuracy: This skill is one that requires us to be able to accurately anticipate how our words will impact the other. Most of the time when we speak, we know before the words leave our mouths how those words will impact who we are speaking to.
- Interpersonal Cognitive Complexity: This area of communication skills deals more with our ability to process social information we receive from our environments than person-to-person communication within a couple. Burleson (1997 ) refers to this skill as a social perception skill. This is significant to marital interaction because as Burleson notes, we tend to marry or make a life commitment to those who exhibit similar levels of cognitive complexity, which in turn aids overall marital satisfaction.
