Answer to Question 1

A constraint function is a function of the decision variables in the linear programming problem. For example, assume that the availability of a certain important input is 500 square feet. However, its requirements for three varieties of a product are 2.0, 1.5, and 3.2 square feet per unit, respectively. If A, B, and C represent the number of units of each variety to produce, then 2.0 A represents the amount of the input used to produce A units of product A, 1.5 B represents the amount of the input used to produce B units of product B, and 3.2 C represents the amount of the input used to produce C units of product C. Hence, amount of material used can be expressed mathematically as the constraint function 2.0A + 1.5B + 3.2C.
