The U.S. attorney general can secure an injunction to forestall the strike for up to 80 days, while the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service attempts to resolve the dispute. The emergency provisions of the Taft-Hartley Act have been invoked only rarely in recent years. The emergency provisions allow the president to delay a strike but do not address the causes of the strike.
