Answer to Question 1

Long-arm statutes give courts power to extend their reach of jurisdiction into other states that would not otherwise be possible. This happens when a party does not meet the residential requirements for jurisdiction (office, employees, property, etc.) but has enough business in the state to warrant jurisdiction. For example, a business incorporated in Delaware, which sells most of its products to customers in Maine, may fall under a long-arm statute of Maine.
