Answer to Question 1

Employers with 50 or more employees are required to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for employees who have worked full time in the preceding 12 months. The leave may be for birth or adoption of a child or for a serious health condition of their own or in their immediate family. The statute defines an immediate family member as a spouse, child, or parent -- but not a sibling, grandchild, or in-law. The employee must be allowed to return to the same or an equivalent job with the same pay and benefits.
