Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia caused by a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium called Legionella pneumophilia that is widely distributed in the environment. The organism thrives in moist places, and people become infected by inhaling airborne organisms in aerosolized water droplets.
