A 2-year-old child is being held in the parent's lap to have his blood drawn by venipuncture. Every time you get close to the child he pulls away from you. He watches you carefully as you get your equipment ready. The receptionist is willing to help, but she cannot draw blood. What would be a good way to make this a successful venipuncture?

Answer to Question 1

Distraction would be the best technique to use. Have the receptionist read a book to the child and at the same time block the child's view so that he cannot see what is going on. Tell the child that there will be a little pinch while the parent holds the child's arm to keep it from moving.
