Answer: Under age 1: 90-95 hemoglobin F; up to 5 hemoglobin A1
Over age 1: 90-95 hemoglobin A1; up to 2 Hgb F; up to 3 Hgb A2
They are different because of the gamma-beta globin chain switch. The conversion of gamma chain to beta chain production changes production of Hb F to Hb A.
