Cigarette smoking is a major cause of esophageal cancer in the United States. When combined with heavy alcohol consumption, the risk for esophageal cancer greatly increases. Both sub-stances are irritants to the mucosa of the esophagus. Smokeless tobacco is also associated with esophageal cancer. Diabetes and hypertension do not increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer.

The shave biopsy removes the top level of the lesion, which stands above the skin line. Removal of a core from the center of the lesion is referred to as a punch biopsy. Excision of the entire le-sion is an excisional biopsy.
