Parasympathetic (inhibitory) nerve fibers supply the sinoatrial node, atrial muscle, and the atrioventricular junction of the heart by the vagus nerves.

Enlargement of the atrial chambers, ventricular chambers, or both, may occur if there is a volume or pressure overload in the heart. Dilatation is an increase in the diameter of a chamber of the heart caused by volume overload. Dilatation may be acute or chronic. Hypertrophy is an increase in the thickness of a heart chamber because of chronic pressure overload. Hypertrophy is commonly accompanied by dilatation. Enlargement is a term that implies the presence of dilatation or hypertrophy or both.
