Toxic megacolon is a life-threatening complication of ulcerative colitis, and it requires immediate surgical intervention. Crohn's disease, small bowel obstruction, and peptic ulcer disease are not life-threatening complications of ulcerative colitis.

Current and former smokers appear to have a greater risk of developing Crohn's disease than nonsmokers. Not smoking will not cause irritable bowel syndrome, acute appendicitis, or small bowel obstruction.
