Answer to Question 1

Correct Answer: 4
People with type 2 diabetes mellitus are usually able to control glucose levels with an oral hypoglycemic medication, but they may require insulin if control is inadequate. Type 1 diabetes mellitus is not treated with oral medications. The person with type 1 DM requires a lifelong exogenous source of the insulin hormone to maintain life. Patients with diabetes do not progress from type 1 to type 2.

Answer to Question 2

Correct Answer: 2, 3, 4
Insulin may be necessary for patients with diabetes mellitus who are experiencing an infection or surgery or have gestational diabetes mellitus. Insulin is not prescribed for patients who are malnourished or are receiving total parenteral nutrition.
