Answer to Question 1

Answer: 1

1. Neurotransmitters are released into the synapse between nerve cells to block or enhance the message to the next cell.
2. The fluid that protects the brain is cerebrospinal fluid.
3. Neurotransmitters do their job and then go back to their original nerve cell for storage; this is called reuptake.
4. Neurotransmitters experience reuptake by the releasing cell and are stored until the next use.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: 3

1. When conducting a mental health assessment, the nurse investigates all of the symptoms the client is experiencing. However, ability to complete developmental tasks is not a predictor of the client's ability to manage the new diagnosis.
2. If mental illness is diagnosed, the physician might order lab work for presence of neurotransmitters.
3. The nurse explores the client's ability to adapt to unpleasant situations, which healthy or unhealthy coping mechanisms the client has used in the past, and what stresses are in the client's life.
4. Family history of mental illness is relevant but does not help the nurse determine how the client will respond to the new illness.
