Childless couples sometimes hire a woman to carry their child for them (i.e., to allow a biologically unrelated fetus to gestate in her womb). The woman they hire is called a surrogate mother.

Although it is true that supporters of same-sex marriage point to the beneficial consequences of same-sex marriage as a reason to accept their view, opponents of same-sex marriage also appeal to its consequences in support of their position. So, the mere fact that someone is a consequentialist does not tell us whether he supports or opposes same-sex marriage.
