The nasopharynx contains the adenoids or pharyngeal tonsils. The oropharynx contains the faucial or palatine tonsils and the lingual tonsils. The tonsils are accessory organs of the lymphatic system that aid in filtering bacteria and other foreign substances from the circulating lymph.
