1. Obstructive apnea is caused by obstruction to the upper airway. This condition generally occurs in middle-aged men who are obese and have a history of excessive daytime sleepiness. It is associated with loud snorting, snoring, and gasping sounds.
2. Central apnea is marked by absence of respiratory muscle activity. A person with this type of apnea may exhibit excessive daytime sleepiness, but the snorting and gasping sounds during the night are absent.
