Bob is a 64-year-old male who presents with a reddened right ear. The auricle of the ear is red, and painful, especially if it is touched. The pain started several days ago and was dull in nature. There was the aforementioned redness, but also warmth and swelling. Bob denies any ear piercing, especially in the auricular area (Do I look like I'd be piercing my ear?). He also denies any injury or surgery to the ear. The doctor diagnoses perichondritis of the auricle and starts Bob on a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. The doctor discusses the need for follow up to make sure the area does not develop an abscess or worsen somehow. Bob is instructed to return for a follow-up in three days. If he develops a fever, he is to call the doctor immediately.
