Answer to Question 1

Mitral annular calcification refers to the presence of calcium deposits in the fibrous, ring-shaped tissue that surrounds the mitral valve.
Students should list sound-alike terms for mitral and annulus (eg, annual).

Answer to Question 2

Hypertrophy generally refers to an increase in the size of an organ (or tissue) due to an increase in the size of the individual cells. Hyperplasia is an increase in the size of an organ or tissue due to an increase in cell number. Neither term is used to refer to a tumor (malignancy). Hypertrophy is often due to increased work required by the tissue.
