The child will not be able to obtain a specimen. The correct procedure is to have the child open the mouth and say ah. The nurse then swabs the back of the throat. A suction catheter cannot obtain the correct specimen. A tongue depressor is used to hold the tongue out of the way, not to obtain the specimen.
