The most basic information a maternity nurse should have concerning conception is:
 
  1. ova are considered fertile 48 to 72 hours after ovulation.
  2. sperm remain viable within the woman's reproductive system for an average of 12 to 24 hours.
  3. conception is achieved when a sperm successfully penetrates the membrane sur-rounding the ovum.
