Answer to Question 1

D
The size of the placenta has not been shown to affect labor time. The adequate size of the pelvis is a factor. A pelvis that is too small in comparison to fetal size to allow the fetus to move through it for birthing will prolong labor. The mental attitude of the mother is a factor. The mother who works through the contractions, allowing the full power of the contractions to effectively dilate the cervix will facilitate her labor. Posterior fetal presentations cause the labor to be extended, because this position is not as effective in resulting in cervical dilation as anterior fetal presentations.

Answer to Question 2

B
The macrosomic infant is at greatest risk for birth injuries secondary to cephalopelvic disproportion.
