Tachypnea is the first indication of respiratory distress, followed, in order of a deteriorating condition, by nasal flaring, grunting, and sternal retractions. Irritability and poor feeding are early manifestations of infection. Cyanosis is a late sign of respiratory distress. Hypotension and pallor are not manifestations of respiratory distress, but rather manifestations of late shock.
