A client who is in her 14th week of pregnancy is in the clinic for a prenatal visit. Her mother also is present.

The grandmother-to-be states that she is quite uncertain about how she can be a good grandmother to this baby because she works full-time, and her own grandmother was retired and was always available when needed by a grandchild. The best response to this concern would be: 1. Don't worry. You'll be a wonderful grandmother. It will all work out fine.
  2. Grandmothers are supposed to be available. You should retire from your job.
  3. As long as there is another grandmother available, you don't have to worry.
  4. What are your thoughts on what your role as grandmother will include?

Answer to Question 1

4
Rationale: As society has changed to encourage a more active lifestyle in the aging population, the role of grandparents has also changed.
Rationale:
1. This is a vague and inappropriate response.
2. Grandparenting can take many forms. Some grandparents are young and employed full-time, while others are retired and have more free time. It is important to avoid clichs and placing guilt on clients to promote effective therapeutic communication.
3. This is an inappropriate response.
4. Encouraging open communication between grandparents-to-be and the parents-to-be can avoid miscommunication in expectations. Grandparenting classes are one way that these roles can be explored.

Answer to Question 2

B
The nurse's response is based on the woman's parity. PIH occurs most commonly in primiparas. At 20 years of age, her age does not increase her risk of PIH. There is no evidence in the question concerning clinical manifestations of PIH or concerning the length of her pregnancy.
