Answer to Question 1

C
Response:
The use of any upright position helps to reduce the length of labor. Research validates that nonmoving back-lying positions such as supine and lithotomy positions during labor are not healthy. The kneechest position would assist in rotating the fetus in a posterior position.

Answer to Question 2

D
Response:
The nurse should first initiate pain assessment with a standardized pain scale upon admission and provide frequent evaluations of pain. Administering NSAIDs or meperidine and using non-pharmacologic pain management techniques are appropriate, but the first priority is a standardized assessment.
