Answer to Question 1

1
Rationale:
1. Cesarean birth is the greatest predictor of postpartum endometritis. The frequent cervical exams necessary to assess for arrest of dilation s another risk factor for postpartum infection.
2. Prolonged rupture of membranes (longer than 12 hours) is a risk factor for postpartum endometritis.
3. Internal fetal monitoring (both internal fetal scalp electrode and intrauterine pressure catheter) are risk factors for postpartum endometritis.
4. Pregnancy-induced hypertension is not a risk factor for development of postpartum endometritis.

Answer to Question 2

3
Rationale:
1. It has no effect on the labor process.
2. It has no effect on the smooth muscles in the lungs.
3. Betamethasone (Celestone) has been found to induce pulmonary maturation, and thereby decrease the risk of respiratory problems in the preterm infant.
4. This medication is not an antibiotic, and therefore will not help resolve a urinary tract infection.
