To fix' or solve' the woman's problems is incompatible with the partnership principle that women are the experts of their own lives. If midwives believe that the women in their care are unable or unwilling to take control of their own lives, long-term health gains will be difficult to achieve.

Caucasian Australians live in what is termed white privilege' where they are unaware of how society is structured to suit their cultural norms. For those who do not share those norms, subtle racism occurs in the context of everyday living, such as shopping, using public transport and eating in restaurantsand, importantly, accessing mainstream services, be they health, welfare, education or justice systems.
