Blood travels through the fetus in a unique pattern. Most blood enters the inferior vena cava through the ductus venosus, empties into the right atrium, and passes through the foramen ovale into the left atrium. Blood returns to the heart from the head through the superior vena cava, goes through the right side of the heart before entering the pulmonary artery, or bypasses the lungs and enters the aorta through the ductus arteriosus.
