Mesonephric ducts become dominant in males; paramesonephric ducts become dominant in females. This is the first gender change that occurs. External genitalia are usually not visible before 12 weeks of gestation, when androgens begin to stimulate their growth. Spermatogenesis occurs in puberty in boys; oogenesis begins sometime after 10 weeks of gestation when the ovaries begin to develop.
