Marketing researchers use two methods of data collection. Quantitative data collection obtains data in a way that allows for statistical analysis. Qualitative data collection uses techniques such as interviews or focus groups to obtain non-numeric information.

Businesses find international markets in a number of ways. Often a business will receive an unsolicited request for a product. Businesses can also enlist the help of third parties such as national or state trade missions to find international markets. These trade missions show products, distribute promotional material, and help develop contacts. Businesses also can actively identify new markets by conducting their own research or participating in international travel.
