A discriminant function is a linear combination of the independent variables that maximally discriminates among categories of the dependent variable. Discriminant functions can be used to separate segments, often following a cluster analysis. On a graph of two dimensions of a clustering solution, a discriminant function can be drawn as a line dividing segments.
