An experimenter wants to test participants' emotional responses to telling lies. She compares the galvanic skin responses of participants while telling the truth (pretest) and while telling lies (posttest). She probably used the galvanic skin response rather than a Likert scale to measure emotional responses because the galvanic skin response is not as likely to produce _____ effects.

Answer to Question 1

D
The galvanic skin response (GSR) is a change in the electrical conductivity of the skin, and is not as easily controlled by most people as is making a deliberate choice on a Likert scale. Therefore, the GSR on the pretest is less likely to influence the GSR on the posttest.

Answer to Question 2

C
Testing effects could occur if the pretest is short and followed closely in time by the posttest.
