Sylvia's behavior has changed because she knows she is in an experiment. She is responding to the features of the research situation that make her respond differently than she normally would.

Most participants want to help the researcher. If they think they know what the experiment is about because of things that happen during their participation (demand characteristics) they may behave differently than they would otherwise (in an effort to help the researcher).
