Answer to Question 1

External validity is the degree to which the results of a study can be generalized outside the specific confines of the study. A threat to external validity is any feature of the study that limits generalization of the results. Threats to external validity can be classified into three categories: (1) results obtained for a unique group of participants may not generalize to other participants; (2) results obtained from a study with unique features not generalize to other studies; (3) results obtained with a specific measurement procedure may not generalize to other measurement procedures.

Though Candida and Aspergillus species are the most common fungal pathogens causing invasive fungal disease in the immunocompromised, infections due to previously uncommon hyaline and dematiaceous filamentous fungi are occurring more often today. Rare fungal infections, once accurately diagnosed, may require surgical debridement, immunotherapy, and newer antifungals used singly or in combination with older antifungals, on a case-by-case basis.

Chronic necrotizing aspergillosis has a slowly progressive process that, unlike invasive aspergillosis, does not spread to other organ systems or the blood vessels. It most often affects middle-aged and elderly individuals, spreading to surrounding tissue in the lungs. The disease often does not respond to conventionally successful treatments, and requires individualized therapies in order to keep it from becoming life-threatening.
