Conflict theory holds that conflict and strife appear to be as basic to society as harmony, integration, and shared beliefs. Power and its distribution are key to understanding society. Struggle over scarce resources and the formation of alliances by various social groups help explain social movements and social change.

Racism is an ideology based on the belief that an observable, supposedly inherited trait, such as skin color, is a mark of inferiority that justifies discriminatory treatment of people having that trait.
