The maintenance of boundaries requires a commitment on the part of the in-group members. The boundaries may be identified through acts of hostility, even violence, against members of the out-group. Group symbols, including rituals, styles of dress, or bumper stickers, identify group members and also maintain the boundary with out-groups.
