Answer to Question 1

When people enter institutions that will take almost complete control over their lives (total institutions) they must be radically changed to accept the new environment. Desocialization occurs as the individual is stripped of personal items that are connected to their previous way of life. A loss of privacy may also serve to break down one's previous identity. Resocialization is the process of learning new values, beliefs, and norms for behavior. This process is generally accomplished through a system of rewards for conformity and punishments for nonconformity. Anticipatory socialization is not connected to extreme changes in one's way of life, but occurs as one prepares for a future role by learning new norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors connected to that role.
