Answer to Question 1

Because the looking-glass self comes from our imaginations, based on our perceptions of others' judgments of us. Human perception is notoriously imperfect; thus, what we imagine others think of us is also likely to be distorted. In addition, others could be sending us misleading signals regarding what they think of us.
