A subculture is a group that is part of the dominant culture, but differs from it in some important way. A counterculture is a subculture that is deliberately and consciously opposed to some aspect of the dominant culture and seeks to set itself apart. Thus, the essential differences are the active opposition and separation of the counterculturea subculture remains an integral part of the dominant culture.
