Rosa Parks, an African American woman, refused to surrender her seat in the black section of a bus to a white man who could not find a place in the white section.
 
  As a result she was arrested and that triggered a massive bus boycott by African Americans that did not end until the buses in Montgomery, Alabama, were finally desegregated.
