predictability  with knowledge of variables, can we reasonably guess human behavior; causality  does one variable cause the other, which is independent and which is dependent.

independent variables influence or cause dependent variables; dependent variables are caused by, depend on, or are influenced by independent variables. Possible examples: independent  race, sex, age, religion; dependent  attitudes, behaviors
