Answer to Question 1

In the first demographic transition a country undergoes significant social change. Specifically, it undergoes a transition from high mortality and fertility to declining mortality followed by declining fertility. Finally, during a posttransition period both mortality and fertility are low. Some researchers now argue that developed, wealthy nations also undergo a second demographic transition. In this transition fertility rates have fallen below replacement levels so populations are aging rapidly. Changes in the living arrangements of families are also a part of this second transition. Finally, populations become more racially/ethnically diverse.
