The second shift, when women work at a paying job and then come home and carry out the household duties, fuels marital tensions and contributes to inequality at home and discrimination in the workplace, against those (mostly women) who have family responsibilities. One way to minimize the negative consequences of the second shift is to work to build egalitarian relationships and to endorse public policies that provide support for all kinds of families.
