Answer to Question 1

Someone may be born into minority status by virtue of his or her physical or cultural characteristics or by being a female. In America, someone born of African American parents, a woman, or into an uncommon religion would be a minority. Groups of people can also become minorities when political boundaries are expanded. After the Mexican War, the United States annexed much of what was formerly Mexican territory. The people living in these territories were transformed from being considered Mexicans to being considered Mexican-Americans. Another way a group becomes a minority is through migration. When thousands of Southern and Eastern Europeans immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s, they became minorities upon arrival in America.
