The Council on Social Work Education (2015 ) in Educational Policy states: The dimensions of diversity are understood as the intersectionality of multiple factors including but not limited to age, class, color, culture, disability and ability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, marital status, political ideology, race, religion/spirituality, sex, sexual orientation, and tribal sovereign status. Intersectionality holds that the classical models of oppression within society (such as those based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, class, age, or disability) do not act independently of one another; instead, these forms of oppression interrelate, creating a system of oppression that reflects the intersection of multiple forms of discrimination. Intersectionality is a theory to analyze how social and cultural categories intertwine. In working with clients, social workers need to view individuals in terms of intersectionality.
