 Symbolic-interaction theory highlights the various meanings people attach to drug use.
 Social-conflict theory focuses on how the issue of social power shapes our drug policies.

 Therapeutic uses: Some drugs offer medical benefits such as controlling seizures, lessening depression, or reducing pain.
 Recreational uses:Alcoholic beverages including beer or wine with a meal can make people feel more relaxed and can even make foods taste better.
 Spiritual or psychological uses: Drugs can alter human consciousness, so that some people use them for psychological or spiritual reasons.
 Escape:Some drugs offer a form of escape from everyday life. People enduring serious trouble may turn to alcohol or other drugs to dull the pain of living.
 Social conformity: Drug use help people to conform and fit in socially. Peer pressure may lead young people to smoke cigarettes or older people to drink cocktails.
