Originally, the Affordable Care Act proposal included a public option, which would enable people to purchase their health insurance from the government, much like Medicare. However, this was dropped in favor of using only private insurance in order to quell opposition on the part of some laissez-faire advocates because it accomplishes its goals with less government involvement.
