Answer to Question 1

A symbol is something that stands for, represents, or takes the place of something else. Anythingany object, event, or wordcan serve as a symbol. The meaning attached to a symbol is derived from social consensus; people simply agree that a particular object will represent something.

Answer to Question 2

Norms are rules of conduct that guide people's behavior. They serve as a script for how to behave, and they enable one, to an extent, to predict how others will behave and to coordinate one's behavior with theirs. Thus, values and norms lend stability and orderliness to society.
