Answer to Question 2

The four basic components of language are phonemes, morphemes, syntax, and semantics. Phonemes are the basic units of sound in a language. English has about 40 phonemes. All of the words in the language are built by combining those phonemes. Morphemes are the smallest units of meaning in a language. In some cases, they are words (cat); in other cases, they may be prefixes or suffixes that change the meaning of a word (anti-; un). Syntax refers to the rules that guide how words are ordered within a sentence. Finally, semantics are the rules that determine word meaning.
