He is presented with pictures of young children while receiving unpleasant electric shocks. Eventually, pictures of young children become aversive stimuli. All of the words in the language are built by combining those phonemes. Morphemes are the smallest units of meaning in a language. In some cases, they are words (cat); in other cases, they may be prefixes or suffixes that change the meaning of a word (anti-; un). Syntax refers to the rules that guide how words are ordered within a sentence. Finally, semantics are the rules that determine word meaning.
