The only ways to surely prevent STDs are abstinence or a monogamous relationship with an uninfected monogamous partner. Other strategies are focused on reducing the risk of contraction: 1) be careful in the choice of sex partners; 2) avoid multiple partners; 3) avoid partners who have multiple partners; 4) be assertive with your partner and communicate your concerns; 5) avoid sexual contact with anyone with a blister or sore around the genitals; 6) engage in protected sexual contact; 7) obtain a medical evaluation if you believe you have been infected; 8) get regular medical checkups; and, 9) abstain when in doubt.
